The Highlights: Navigating Entrepreneurial Ecosystems

This January we kicked off the year with our Swerve Speaker, Karen Barnes from Venture Cafe Winston-Salem.

Karen serves as the Executive Director for Venture Cafe, a weekly gathering that facilitates conversation between innovators, entrepreneurs, and creatives. Karen is a lifelong entrepreneur with a background in journalism and marketing and a passion for inclusive and social entrepreneurship. Karen brought her usual contagious energy and optimism to the group and shared her favorite tips on Navigating the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem both here in Winston-Salem and beyond.

As creatives there are so many incredible resources available from events and programming to funding opportunities and mentors. The problem happens when creatives feel there is a barrier between knowing those resources are out there and not understanding how to take advantage of them. January’s Swerve presentation not only jumped into the diverse entrepreneurial organizations available in the local ecosystem but discussed how entrepreneurs of all stages can find what they need most. She also reviewed her six stages of ecosystem development and what it takes to create connections that help to build everyone up.

Karen’s six stages of ecosystem development:

  1. Connecting in Chaos
  2. Moving to Mainstream
  3. Ideas to Action
  4. Taking Root
  5. Growing Up
  6. Retaining Value

Another great resource Karen shared with for those creative businesses residing in the Triad area, is Triad Connects! Triad Connects  is a FREE, curated community of hundreds of vetted volunteer startup advisers from Piedmont Triad organizations ready to support you. Anyone can download this app and receive assistance and support in their business right at their fingertips.

Don’t forget that Swerve members can find each of our Speaker’s presentations livestreamed and recorded as well as a copy of their presentation slides inside the Swerve Facebook Community!

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, February 21st at 11:30 as we welcome our speaker, D’Andre Starnes to February’s Swerve event. Starnes works as a CPA for Starnes & Co. LLC, a local creative consulting agency. During his time with us, he will share tips on tax preparation and how you can best manage your finances in 2019.
