When Chad Cheek’s business partner abruptly left in 2012, Cheek kept wondering if he should shut down his company and find employment elsewhere. Fortunately, a mentor stepped in at the perfect time with the right advice, guiding him through a crisis to business success. Learn more about the importance of mentorships with Chad Cheek at the Center for Creative Economy’s Swerve meetup on Thursday, May 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Flywheel in Winston Salem. Cheek will share how to find a mentor, give an overview of the responsibilities of a mentor and the mentee and how to get the most out of a mentorship relationship.
Cheek’s story is just one example for how the right mentor can have a profound impact on your career. “There is a direct correlation between my conversation with my mentor in 2012 to my success today,” said Cheek.
Cheek admits it was chaotic when his business partner left. “I knew nothing about the agency side of advertising, but my partner did. We both had clear paths for what we were responsible for. My responsibility was client management, business development, moving the business forward, but not to focus on the creative product.” Feeling helpless, Cheek sought advice from someone who had experience in the advertising world. “You already know everything you need to know. Your job now changes,” said Cheek, recalling words of wisdom from his mentor.
Are you looking for a mentor? Here’s a tip from Chad Cheek – “Mentorship matching is great, but the best matches happen organically. So keep your eyes open to people you want to learn something from.”
