Mindfulness is both a practice and a state of mind.
This was the resonating theme of the January 19 Swerve MeetUp with Mindfulness professional Cheryl Schirillo. In a room of close to 50 Swerve members and guests, Cheryl shared her experience and passion for Mindfulness for the emerging future.
According to Cheryl, “mindfulness is the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment without judgment. When you enter into a moment of mindfulness you naturally interrupt the fight or flight stress response allowing your body and mind to spontaneously return to their natural state of healing and creativity.”
Time is our most precious resource, and most people find it difficult to get everything done. This often brings feelings of anxiety, stress, and can even make us sick! The results of these feelings start to cut into our sleep time and cause our brain to become too scattered to focus. The solution: Mindfulness.
Business leaders at Google, Aetna, Twitter, and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are using mindfulness practices at work. According to Cheryl, “this inner shift is at the core of all deep leadership work today. It’s a shift that requires us to expand our thinking from the head to the heart. It is a shift from an ego-system awareness that cares about the well-being of oneself to an eco-system awareness that cares about the well-being of all, including oneself.”
Cheryl led the group in a 3 minute mindfulness breathing meditation and asked attendees to focus on what are you doing when your best work emerges? She shared the 8 Pillars of Mindfulness, and encouraged everyone to try it on their own. The Swerve MeetUp was a great start to the New Year with a focus on relieving stress and enhancing creativity.
