If you ask Taneka M. Bennett what she does, she’ll tell you she’s healing hearts through theatre. “I want to create works that encourage people to overcome obstacles and to be the person they are destined to be.” Taneka’s love for musical theatre began at an early age. “As a child I would round up the neighborhood kids, and teach them songs from my favorite musicals or I would have them sing songs I wrote. I was an actor as well, and landed a Crest commercial, which I later lost after losing my front tooth the morning of the shoot.” Music and writing has always been a part of her life. Growing up in a musical household, such greats as Patti Labelle and others were often in her company. An accomplished viola player, she played pit for several musicals and performed with various touring companies as an actress/vocalist. She’s opened for Dr. Maya Angelou, James Earl Jones, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Tavis Smiley and others. Her recent work Mental the Musical performed to sold out crowds and she is currently in the process of launching a new twenty-three song musical. Taneka holds a masters in marketing/public relations and uses her talents to support creative artists and organizations.
“I love connecting with other creatives. It’s therapeutic. Through conversation we find solutions for challenges and inspire each other. After each Swerve meetup, I leave inspired – ready to create.”
