James Gledhill followed a winding path to a career in digital marketing and product development. It first began with an interest in film while he was a psychology student the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “While chairing the student film committee, I fell in love with producing, sharing films and creating experiences that people loved,” said James. That experience led him to the fledgling University of North Carolina School of the Arts Film School where he was part of their second graduating class. But within a year of moving to Los Angeles James was quickly recruited by a digital company looking for producers. “It was during the digital boom and I was hired to create content for AOL’s online communities. It was similar to being a producer for a TV morning show.” James went on to work with a series of agencies and startups in Chicago, Santa Monica, Austin, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem with teams from all over the world.
As a Director of Digital Experience, James just wrapped up nearly ten years with MullenLowe to start his own company Mighty Thumbs, which he describes as a digital collective focused on the creation of mobile apps and experiences that encourage health, activity, personal improvement and community growth. With experience working for brands that range from Tresemme/Unilever to HondaJet and the US Army, James has directed everything from fully immersive brand and transactional websites to mobile apps and email campaigns. His most recent project involved using digital experiences to make a Miami 5K charity race into a national event.
