CCE to Represent the Triad in National Research Project

The Center for Creative Economy announced that it will represent the Triad and North Carolina in a national study on the creative sector. Partnering with members of the National Creative Economy Coalition, the CCE will analyze existing creative economy reports to determine the first national definition of the industry and make recommendations for datasets to be included in future reports.

“The creative economy is a major part of the triad, comprising over 30,000 jobs within the creative industries and innovation sectors, ” says CCE Executive Director Margaret Collins. “Our involvement in this project will raise the profile of the Triad and North Carolina creative economy throughout the US. Our CCE projects will become known nationally. ”

The national project has also received one of the first research grants ever offered by the National Endowment for the Arts. According to Collins, the CCE and partnering organizations will form a National Advisory Council and provide a national comparison of existing industry reports.

“Our research seeks to place creative industries in a broader economic context,” says Project Principal Investigator Christine Harris of Milwaukee, WI. “Establishing a national creative economy has the potential to place the industry as an equal partner with other sectors in the U.S., and measure the role of creativity and innovation in job development.”

Organizations from across the country are uniting to participate in the research, located in Georgia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, Ohio, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and working with the Oklahoma and North Carolina Departments of Commerce. The Advisory Council held its first meeting this month to establish the criteria for the reports and outline the project.

The Creative Workforce as a Focus for Economic Development

Richard Florida’s writings on the creative class have underpinned much of the urban regeneration work in Europe,Australia and North America over the past decade. The creative sector is also getting increasing attention in India, Brazil and China. A new publication from ESPON shows regional patterns and trends in the creative workforce across Europe. It argues that the ability to attract creative workers is highly linked to the qualities of places, and that the opportunities are not confined to the urban centres.

Fueling the Creative Economy

Graphic Design.com tracks the emerging Creative Economy movement through seven organizations nationally. This is a follow up to Nicole Spiegel-Gotsch's January 3rd article, "Fueling the Creative Economy" announcing the appointment of Joe Bookchin to the position of Director of the Office of the Creative Economy in Vermont. Here she poses questions to each of the seven organizations who share outlines of their rich, multidiciplined programs design to stimulate jobs and support economic growth in the creative industries.
